Cooper Student Artist Featured Locally
Showcasing Artistic Talent and Photography at Young Makers Market
The John Cooper School is proud to celebrate junior Emery Oliphant ’28, who will showcase and sell her photography alongside 45 other young artists at the third annual Young Makers Market on Saturday, August 29.
Presented by The Woodlands Arts Council, the Young Makers Market brings together artists ages 9 to 18 for an experience that extends beyond creating art. Before the market, participants take part in a workshop led by local professionals focused on entrepreneurship, customer engagement and communicating the stories behind their work.
For Emery, the opportunity represents another step in a photography journey that began somewhat unexpectedly.
Her interest started on the sidelines of her brother’s soccer games. Looking for something to do beyond watching the game, Emery picked up her father's 18-year-old camera and began taking photos.
"The pictures I took were pretty rough," Emery told PaperCity. "But I was so proud of them and kept going from there."
Back at Cooper, an unexpected connection helped that interest grow. Emery's Upper School advisor, Ms. Schiebel, also happened to be Cooper's photography teacher. Emery brought her first soccer photos to Ms. Schiebel, who helped her adjust her camera settings and has continued encouraging her development as a photographer.
"Ms. Schiebel is such an incredible mentor for me," Emery shared with PaperCity. "And I am so grateful for her support."
Since those first soccer games, Emery has continued developing her artistic perspective and sharing her work beyond campus. Her photography was previously exhibited through The Woodlands Arts Council's Winter in The Woodlands, and her journey as a young photographer was recently featured by PaperCity.
Now, the Young Makers Market gives Emery the opportunity not only to exhibit her photography, but also to experience the entrepreneurial side of being a working artist by presenting, promoting and selling her original work directly to the community.
"My support system throughout the whole process has been incredible," Emery told PaperCity. "I hope to speak to more people and make more connections and see what my work can make people feel."
