New Tradition Blossoms in Kinder–Senior Program

Planting Roots for the Future at The John Cooper School
At The John Cooper School, traditions are more than moments, they are meaningful experiences that connect students across generations and celebrate the journey of growth. This year, the School community welcomed a heartfelt new addition to its beloved Kinder–Senior Program, one that quite literally plants the seeds of the future.

First established in September 1993, the Kinder–Senior Program has been a cornerstone of the Cooper experience for more than three decades. It pairs the School’s youngest learners with its graduating seniors in a year filled with shared activities, mentorship, and memorable milestones. From classroom visits to celebratory events, the program creates meaningful connections that leave a lasting impression on both age groups. For seniors, it offers an opportunity to reflect on their own journey and serve as role models. For kindergarteners, it provides a sense of belonging and inspiration as they begin their educational path.

As part of this new tradition, graduating seniors presented their kindergarten buddies with small bags of loblolly pine tree seeds, each accompanied by simple instructions to help the young students nurture and grow their own trees. The gesture carries a powerful and lasting message about growth, connection, and the shared experiences that define the Cooper journey.

Attached to each set of seeds was a note from the seniors that read:
“Thank you for sharing such a special year with us! We give you these seeds to plant and care for so you can watch your tree grow as you do, rooted in curiosity and reaching towards wisdom.”

The addition of the seed-giving tradition enhances the Kinder–Senior experience in a deeply tangible way. It extends the impact of the program beyond the School year, inviting kindergarten students to continue nurturing something that represents both their bond with their senior buddies and their own personal growth.
Faculty and staff have embraced the new tradition with enthusiasm, recognizing its ability to capture the spirit of the Kinder–Senior Program while adding a layer of reflection and forward-looking optimism.

“The Kinder–Senior Program has always been about connection, reflection, and growth,” said Laura Schroeder, Director of College Counseling. “This new tradition adds a beautiful layer of meaning by giving our youngest students something tangible to nurture over time. It reflects the journey our seniors have taken and the one our kindergarteners are just beginning, and it reinforces the idea that growth happens gradually, with care, curiosity, and purpose.”

As the kindergarten students plant their seeds and care for their growing trees, they carry with them the encouragement and example set by the graduating class.

With this new tradition, The John Cooper School continues to honor its commitment to fostering meaningful relationships, celebrating growth, and creating experiences that resonate far beyond the classroom. It is a simple act with a lasting impact, one that ensures the legacy of each graduating class continues to take root in the lives of those just beginning their journey.
