Athletics

Cooper is a member of the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC), which consists of 17 of the finest college-preparatory, independent schools in Texas and Oklahoma. The SPC was established in 1952 "for students' enjoyment, physical fitness, and instruction in skills and character; for the intrinsic worth of individual sports and team games, which are ably taught, faithfully played, and fairly matched; and for the mutual benefits derived from keen competition and true sportsmanship within a sensible educational framework."

Middle School interscholastic teams compete in the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference (HJPC). Middle School athletics operates with a "limited cut" policy offering participation to seventh and eighth grade students who are willing to commit the time and effort required for team membership. Middle School teams are fielded for every sport that is offered on the varsity level, with the exception of golf and swimming. Sixth grade students can participate in football and track & field.

The John Cooper School fields interscholastic varsity teams in the following sports:
Boys: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field
Girls: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball

Facilities

Cooper's athletic facilities include the Austin Gymnasium used by the lower school and the 30,000 square foot, the two-court Dunlap Gymnasium used for physical education, volleyball, and basketball. Outdoor facilities include Pugh Field, a lighted synthetic turf football and soccer field surrounded by the six-lane Pate Track; the Field Family Diamond at Finnie Park, a lighted baseball field with indoor batting cage; the lighted Pisula Softball Field; and the four-court, lighted Chenault Tennis Complex.

Dragon Booster Club

The Dragon Booster Club supports the school's athletic programs and its student athletes by providing financial support to the athletic program; promoting awareness, pride and excitement among the parents, alumni, faculty and students; and sponsoring events to increase community, spirit, and attendance at school sporting events. Examples of support include sponsoring Homecoming weekend activities, hosting the annual Athletic Award Evening, contributing to volleyball's Dig Pink fundraising effort, organizing the annual Booster Bash for student physicals, purchasing athletic equipment, and helping to fund facilities.
