Varsity CROSS COUNTRY • Girls are Invitational Champions, Boys in Sixth!
10/8 at Lake Houston Invitational at Hargrave High School in Huffman, TX
From Coach Matt Bohan: It was a great day for our girls’ team as they won the Lake Houston Invitational at Huffman Hargrave High School!
The girls’ cross country team repeated as champions this weekend at the Lake Houston Invitational, at a 4A public school, Huffman Hargrave High School. The team was led by senior Claire Varnai who finished in third place with a 5K time of (21:02). She was followed by junior Sidney Cartwright (7th), sophomore Ava Minarovic (13th), and freshman Paige Cromley (14th) and junior Mary Bannon (36th). They were followed in the team scoring by Shilpa Rumalla (39th) and Emily Black (41st). This was a great race for our girls as several ran both season and all-time personal bests. We are very pleased with the progress the girls' team continues to make with each week.
The boys’ team ran into some tough competition finishing in sixth place. Our lead runner, senior Jonathan Goodridge had a tough day but managed a ninth place finish with a 5k time of 16:59. He was followed by sophomore Mitchell Shannon in 13th place with a time of 17:04, knocking 15 seconds off his personal best 5K time. Rounding of the top five scorers were Wiley Coleman (49th), Wes Willgrubs (51st) and Brian Ross (59th). Also competing and running well were Adam Muhith (60th), Nick Mahler (74th), Garrett Groppell (79th) and Blair Chapman(79th).
Every meet is an important race experience in cross country. Each race, good or bad, is a learning experience important in our preparation for our championship meet in November.
Cooper cross country will compete next in the SPC South Zone meet on October 22 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.

From Coach Brent Landrum: We were off to a tough start Friday night when we fumbled on our first two possessions and then had a bad snap on the punt on our third possession. That gave Casady a very short field for the entire first quarter and they scored each time. Getting in a 20-0 hole is tough to climb out of, and we had a chance in the third quarter to get the game back to two scores, only to let it slip away. The boys fought hard all night long. We had our most productive offensive night of the year, gaining 451 yards of total offense; still, the turnovers are killing us. I thought our defense played well at times but the short field they had to defend put them in a bad spot too many times.
We go back on the road again this Friday to Arlington, TX to play The Oakridge School. It will be another tough test. I am proud of this team and I expect them to play hard again and fight to the end like they always do.
Season Record: John Cooper is 3-3 for the season and 2-3 in SPC 3A.

(Cooper won in three straight sets: 25-12,26-24,26-24)
From Coach Ray Hedden: We won this SPC match in three straight sets, sweeping Kinkaid. Kayley Wood and Kara O’Neal dominated the night hitting with very high efficiency. Ball control was our issue in our previous game and we did a much better job passing this time. This week we play non-conference games in preparation for SPC play, including DIG PINK® the following week.
