Preparing Students for an AI-Driven World

Cooper Featured in Houston Business Journal
The John Cooper School is featured in the Houston Business Journal in a new article exploring how Cooper is preparing students to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid technological change.

Titled “How this Houston school is building skills that outlast technology,” the feature highlights Cooper’s longstanding commitment to developing critical and creative thinkers, effective communicators, responsible citizens and leaders, and lifelong learners. As access to information becomes nearly instantaneous, the article examines why the distinctly human abilities to think critically, communicate effectively, exercise discernment and turn ideas into action are becoming even more important.

Head of School Dr. Stephen Popp describes these enduring abilities as “skills that travel,” skills students can carry with them regardless of how technology, careers, and the world around them continue to evolve.
The feature explores how those skills develop throughout a Cooper education, from Lower School students learning to present their ideas with confidence to Upper School students pursuing independent studies that bring together interests across disciplines. It also highlights the importance of curiosity, intellectual humility, service and student-driven leadership within the Cooper experience.

The article also addresses Cooper’s approach to artificial intelligence and the growing importance of wisdom and discernment as technology becomes more capable.
“It’s one thing to have artificial intelligence, but you won’t find a lot of artificial wisdom,” Popp shared with the Houston Business Journal.
While the tools students use will continue to change, Cooper’s focus remains firmly rooted in preparing young people to think for themselves, engage thoughtfully with others, and recognize their ability to make a difference.
