Dragons Take 2nd Overall, Wong Breaks SPC Record

Southwest Preparatory Conference Golf Championships Held April 24-25
The John Cooper School varsity boys’ golf team finished second, runner-up overall, in the SPC Golf Championships that took place at Cypresswood Golf Club, April 24-25. Junior Ben Wong earned SPC individual champion and broke the SPC record by three strokes by shooting 68-66 for a total of 134 total. Wong, along with sophomores Christopher McDonald (6th) who shot 78-72 for a total of 150 and Sean Kelly (9th), who shot 75-78 for a total of 153, were named All-SPC for the tournament.

Fellow Dragon golfers Ryan Berrigan shot 81-84 and Davis Noyes shot 96-96. Coach Rod Gold had only praise for the team. “I am very proud of the boys,” he said. “They came out and played their best golf of the year. They shot their two best rounds to earn the honor of Conference Runners-Up. The boys displayed tremendous improvement throughout the course of the season. While I am extremely happy with their performance on the course, I am equally happy with the way they gelled as a team. We refer to our team as a family, and they supported each other like family.”

The girls’ team finished in 9th place overall, and Claire Coleman led the team, shooting 99-102 for a total of 221. Patty Chow shot 115-108 (223), Natalie Osmond 122-113 (235) and Lauren Sands (131-136 (267). “The girls all worked hard throughout the course of the season,” Gold said. “They gained knowledge and displayed improved skills. I am very proud of our girls team.”
