Cooper’s Tristan Craig Ties For Male Scholar Athlete of The Year

Ten Dragons were represented, three lauded at area scholar athlete banquet.

It was a big night for scholar athletes from The John Cooper School at the 11th Annual Mike Ogg All-Montgomery County Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards Ceremony that was held on May 4 at the Lone Star Convention Center.

Representing Cooper were 10 scholar athlete finalists. Dragon soccer player Tristan Craig tied for top male honors, making him the first Cooper athlete to be named an overall Gold Award recipient. Craig was also named top scholar athlete for soccer and top scholar athlete for Cooper.

Tennis player Hannah Weinstein was named an overall Bronze Award winner as well as top scholar athlete for tennis and top scholar athlete for Cooper. Softball player Taylor Sloop joined the honorees by being named the top scholar athlete for softball.

Tristan Craig, a four-year member of the varsity soccer team, played center defender and served as team captain, earning All-Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) honors. The 2016 class valedictorian is a National Merit Finalist and a member of Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society where he served as vice president his junior year. In addition, Craig has made over 200 blankets for Project Linus, a national group that makes blankets for patients in children’s hospitals. He also helps with website design and content for the local chapter of Project Linus. Craig will attend Harvard University in the fall where he will  study engineering.

“I am extremely proud of, and happy for, Tristan,” said Cooper’s Head Soccer Coach, Bryan Sherman. “He has worked very hard over the past four years and it’s such a great honor for him to be recognized as top amongst all the scholar athletes in Montgomery County.”

Tennis team captain Hannah Weinstein has played on the varsity tennis team for four years and has earned All-SPC honors this year. A National Merit Commended Student and National Hispanic Scholar, Weinstein chairs Cooper’s Honor Council and is active in the Student Diversity Committee. She will attend Yale University in the fall.

“Hannah takes her commitments very seriously,” said Cooper’s Head Tennis Coach Jill DelRio. “Anything she does, she does to the best of her ability with 100 percent effort. It did not surprise me to see the list of accomplishments when nominating her for scholar athlete; she maintains a focus on the job at hand that many adults would love to have. To be able to juggle all that she does an exceptional level is mind-boggling.”

As co-captain and a four-year member of the varsity softball team, Taylor Sloop earned All-SPC accolades, plus offensive MVP honors the last two years and MVP honors this year. She is active in the school’s aerial arts program and an avid ballet dancer. A National Merit Finalist, she will study engineering and play softball for Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California in the fall. “It wasn’t a surprise to me that Taylor was recognized, considering her dedication, determination and work ethic,” said Cooper Head Softball Coach Nicole Hedden. “We are very proud of her accomplishments and can’t wait to see what the future brings for her!”

Cooper’s other scholar athlete finalists, and their sport, include Cross Austin, boys’ baseball; Kathryn Early, girls’ basketball; Bella Evans, girls’ track & field; Michael Gerber, boys’ football; Turner Gregory, boys’ tennis; Ryan Mullen, boys’ track & field and Sydney Shannon, girls’ swimming.

The five Rotary Clubs of Montgomery County sponsor the annual awards banquet. Area high schools nominated an athlete per sport and five were chosen as finalists in each sport, based on ability in their chosen activity, academic achievement, school awards, activities and community involvement. One winner per sport and one overall boys and one over girl winner was selected. This year, one male and one female scholar athlete was also honored from each school.
