Here's what happened last week in Dragon sports!

Volleyball brought home second place at the Orin Covell Longhorn Tourney, Dragon cross country teams had a good showing at Friday Night Lights and Varsity football hosted their first home game.

Results from the week of August 24

Varsity VOLLEYBALL The Dragons couldn’t quite repeat last year’s championship, but they went 6-3 for the weekend and brought home second place at the Orin Covell Longhorn Tourney 27-29 in Spring Branch with Taylor Turner, Kayley Wood and Christina Gooch earning all-tournament honors.

From Coach Jim “Smoki” Richardson:
The girls put up a good showing. We started out sluggish on Day One and played some good volleyball on Day Two, but just couldn't seem to finish. Going into the gold bracket on the third day, we faced a tough opponent in Katy Taylor. We struggled with unforced errors in the first game but recouped our composure and made some necessary adjustments in Game Two thus winning set and forcing a Game 3. Game 3 we controlled the set and went on to defeat them in three. Next, we faced Sealy who had beat us the day before in a three-set match. The girls regained the intensity we had been missing which allowed us to beat them in two sets, sending us to the final where we faced George Ranch. We held our own for awhile in the first set, but eventually fell to their overwhelming offense. Game Two was much of the same. We ended up runner-up, placing 2nd overall out of 24 teams.

“I am very proud of how the girls came together and fought to get back into the final. It was a good weekend for us and a total team effort.”

Next up for the Dragons: The games begin! Away game at Concordia Lutheran on Tues., Sept.1 at 6:30 p.m. and a home game vs. St. Thomas Episcopal on Thurs., Sept. 3. at 5:30 p.m.
