Dragon Volleyball Ranked Top Five In Nation For Dig Pink®
Teams Raise Funds For Breast Cancer Research
In the ninth year of involvement in Dig Pink®, the Dragon volleyball teams’ efforts earned them the distinction of being one of the top five fundraising teams in the nation.
“Although the overall ranking for our school is never the goal, it is such a testament to The John Cooper School community to continuously be one of the top schools nationwide in regard to funds raised for metastatic breast cancer research,” Cooper’s Dig Pink coordinator, Coach Amber Clevenger said. “Our focus moving forward will be in finding other ways to support the breast cancer community.”
The Dragons join fellow conference rivals, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin in the Top Five, as well as Randolph High School, Randolph, Minn., West Springfield High School, West Springfield, Va. and Massapequa High School, Massapequa, NY, each raising over $10,000 each in support of Side-Out’s mission of stage IV breast cancer research.
The school-wide Dig Pink® volleyball event on October 2 included a volleyball game versus Duchesne, pink-themed activities, a bake sale and t-shirt sales to raise funds for breast cancer research.
The team gave this year’s event a poignant personal touch, by adding a video to the event. In the video, athletes and club members shared why the Dig Pink® effort is important to them. “When the video played, it was surreal seeing all the students who are touched by cancer,” Ray Hedden, head volleyball coach said.
Varsity volleyball won the game in a sweep for the first time in three years, but the real winner is always breast cancer research. “It was rewarding to win the big game that symbolizes our support for those affected by breast cancer,” senior volleyball co-captain Hailey Huettel said.
Dragon volleyball is credited with raising more than $134,000 in the event’s nine years.
