Applying to Cooper

It is just as important for a prospective family to become familiar with The John Cooper School as it is for the Admission Committee to become familiar with the academic and personal qualities of each applicant. The admission process is designed to enable prospective families and the school to determine whether an appropriate match exists between the two. We encourage you to attend an on-campus admission event so you and your child will gain a true sense of the Cooper culture. Our commitment is to be a school which provides for the needs of the whole student—intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and ethical—through a balanced educational program.

The admission process is conducted independently of the need-based financial process. Admission decisions are made in the best interest of the School by the Admission Committee, which consists of the Director of Enrollment Management, division heads, and faculty representatives. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of test results, academic records or developmental readiness, teacher recommendation(s), and interviews/observations. The Head of School reviews and approves the final recommendations of the Admission Committee. First priority in admission is given to the most capable students. Other factors that may be considered include special talents or being the sibling of a current or former Cooper student.
