VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Dragons Beat St. Agnes

8/21 vs St. Agnes WIN

From Coach Ray Hedden: Cooper took on a very athletic St. Agnes team with some very impressive offensive players. I was very proud of our girls for withstanding some big swings coming at them and pushing through. Cooper won the match in five sets on their court! It was a great team win with everyone contributing. I am very proud of them!

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Varsity Boys finish 7th, Girls 17th

8/24 at Friday Night Lights, Bear Branch Sports Park

From Coach George Dohner: The Cooper Cross Country teams opened their season Friday night at The Woodlands High School’s Friday Night Lights meet. The teams ran really well in a very talented field of teams, including several contenders from last year’s public school state championships.

The Cooper boys’ varsity team finished in seventh place in the Varsity A division. This was one of our best showings ever as a team in the FNL meet. Senior Eli Araya led the team with a 29thplace finish with a time of 13:21 in the 4000 meter race. He was followed by Mitchell Shannon (46th), Eric Burns (52nd), Will McDermott (53), and Cadan Hanson (72nd). This was a great start for us as our top five broke the 14-minute mark. This bodes well for our quest for the future of this season.

Although the girls’ varsity team finished 17th, we were very pleased with their opening efforts. Sophomore Katie Drake led the Cooper girls on the two-mile course, finishing in 70th place among nearly 200 runners. Drake ran a two-mile time of 13:03 and looked great doing it. Also running well were Uche Oguchi (13:48), Madison Breaux (13:56), freshman Amber Navarra (14:00), Ava Minarovic (14:18) and Caroline Courtney (14:34). The girls are training hard and had a decent showing in their opening meet and competed well in against a tough field of team. We expect good things to come from this team and are excited to finally get our season under way.

Our sub-varsity teams also ran well with several personal records set at FNL. Cooper also competed in the Varsity B divisions, JV Girls Division, and Freshman Boys divisions. Results for all are listed below. One standout performance was from Freshman Drew Wilkerson who finished in first place in the Freshman Boys’ race. This very talented runner has a bright future ahead of him and we can’t wait to watch him mature into our high school program.

VARSITY FOOTBALL

8/17 (scrimmage) at Second Baptist

From Coach Brent Landrum: Second Baptist is a very good team. I see them making a long run in the TAPPS playoffs. We got off to slow start and we had a hard time handling their skill people but once we settled in, we played really well. Offensively we scored five touchdowns and defensively we scored one touchdown. We gave up seven scores defensively. We knew going into this scrimmage that we’d be hard pressed to stop them consistently with the level of skill they have. I am very pleased with the results of our two scrimmages. I think it sets us up well for the season. The boys can’t wait until this Friday August 31st for the home and season opener against Frassati Catholic.
