#ALLTOGETHERNOW Campaign In 'High Octane' Drive

Hear From Teacher Jane Choi About the First 10 Weeks

ALL TOGETHER NOW!
In week 9 of the 10-week Annual Fund Campaign, let’s take a closer look inside the Cooper experience from the perspective of Lower School science with Mrs. Jane Choi.

Jane Choi
Lower School Science Teacher

In my humble opinion, students at The John Cooper School are some of the best and brightest science minds around. As such, our Lower School science classroom is abuzz with the sounds of young minds at work, even within the first ten weeks of school. Kindergarteners learn about the inner workings of their senses as they guess mystery smells, read and write their names in braille, and use digital oscilloscopes to observe the unique wave patterns of their voices. Meanwhile, first grade scientists put their new knowledge of light and color to the test as they navigate laser mazes, dissect and build kaleidoscopes, and conduct mock forensic investigations using ink chromatography. Budding entomologists in the second grade overcome any initial aversions to crawling animals as they watch mealworms and wax worms travel through their respective life cycles and conduct behavioral tests with bess beetles. All the while, new seeds and seedlings in the outdoor Children’s Garden quietly take root and ready themselves for a soon and coming harvest season.

Our classroom is concomitantly built to support children’s inquisitiveness and curiosity about the natural world. A student-centered layout includes a specimen display that is enthusiastically curated by our students throughout the year as they discover rocks, shells, and exoskeletons. A new freshwater ecosystem, which was installed into our room last year, formed the basis of an emergent prekindergarten study of cichlids and continues to be a point of interest for many of our students and visitors. Finally, our learning space has been outfitted with technology such as a writable wall and a wireless projector, all of which work seamlessly to buttress our collective science thinking.

Cooper’s Annual Fund Campaign, “All Together NOW: See What We Can Do In Ten Short Weeks” is off and running. This year's campaign is a 10-week "high octane drive" which began on September 18 and will wrap up by November 30. This campaign will showcase where – and how far – annual fund gifts actually go and will give you a glimpse of what makes a Cooper student's education so exceptional. Follow us on social media as we take a closer look and show you what happens inside classrooms and around campus. Go online to www.johncooper.org/giving and make your pledge or gift today. Help us reach our goal of $1 million and school-wide participation.
