First Grader’s 'Cubist' Self Portrait Selected For Display at State Capitol

Exhibit Opens March 6 in Austin, Runs Through March 26

Kara Lothian’s colorful self-portrait she created using oil-pastels and entitled “The White Haired Girl,” has been selected to be a part of the Texas Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month State Capital Artwork Exhibit in Austin.  Lothian is a first grade student and her teacher, Amy Dietrich, said the painting was part of a unit of study on the Cubist style that was made famous by Pablo Picasso.

The Youth Art Month Capital Artwork Exhibit showcases works of art from students in PK through Grade 12 from throughout the state of Texas. Artwork from Texas public school districts and private schools will be represented in the exhibit that opens on March 6 at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and continues through March 26 when there will be a special reception and awards ceremony.

The 2017 exhibit will be displayed from March 29 to April 4 in the Lower Rotunda of the Texas State Capitol Building.
