Cooper Student Writers, Artists Garner Record Number of Gold Key Awards

Gold Key Recipients to Continue at National Level of Competition
 
John Cooper Upper School students again had a very strong presence in the regional level adjudication of the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Students are awarded Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mentions for their writing and visual arts. Students who earn Gold Key awards move on to the national level of the competition, to be held in New York City in June.

WRITING RECOGNITIONS

In total, 15 Cooper Upper School writing students were recognized with 39 writing awards – 10 Gold Keys, 13 Silver Keys and 16 Honorable Mentions. The following students were awarded Gold Key awards and will continue in the competition: Mallory Bechtel in poetry for, “Poem of Procrastination;” Gibson Field in poetry for “A Moment,” and for her Writing Portfolio, “Behind County Lines;” Grace Lawson for her Dramatic Script, “For His Civility;” Valeria Lizarraga in Science Fiction for “After the War;” Andrea Perez Florez in Poetry for “These Kids Don’t Care: My Bruised Apathy,” and in Science Fiction for “Songbird: The Melody of a Broken Heart;” Sadie Robb in Poetry for “Grass Stains” and in Novel Writing for “Vignettes from Wildwood;” and Gabriel Sanchez Ainsa in Poetry for “The Second Coming: My Ode to William Buster Yates.”

Awarded Silver Keys were Gibson Field (3), Oriana Garcia, Alyssa Hu, Nicole Juszczak, Grace Lawson, Andrea Perez Florez (2) and Sadie Robb. Receiving Honorable Mentions were Claire Cromley (3), Gibson Field, Oriana Garcia, T.J. Gill, Nicole Juszczak, Grace Lawson, Carina Masuelli (4), Andrea Perez Florez (2), Grace Ritch, Sadie Robb and Maya Robles.

VISUAL ARTS RECOGNITIONS
 
Cooper Upper School students were awarded 145 recognitions in the visual arts – 13 Gold Keys, 47 Silver Keys and 85 Honorable Mentions. Awarded Gold Key awards and moving on in competition are Isaac Drickhamer in Industrial Design; Samyuktha Hari in Jewelry; in Photography, Connell McGinnis for “Went Up In Smoke,” Natalie Osmond for “Dream On,” Jonathan Spangler-Sakata for “After Hours,” and Peyton Tague for “Marks the Spot;” Lia O’Riordan in Drawing and Illustration for “Careful Thinking;” in Sculpture, Madi Price for “Bounded Love” and Olivia Swanbeck for “Broken Dreams;” Isabel Sands in Fashion for “Untamable Rope;” Zoriana Sutherland in Ceramics and Glass for “Collapsing Cup,” Gabriel Sanchez in Film & Animation for “The Apprentice’s Library” and Ashley Wu in Painting for “Transformation of Thought.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL AWARDS
 
Also moving on to compete nationally are Middle School visual art students who earned six Gold Key Awards in the competition. They are Olivia Amador for “Entangled,” Tori Osmond for “Split In Two” and Nancy Lee for “Mock Brawl” in Film & Animation; Connor Tait for “The Highlighted Face” in Painting; Walker Ruckman in Jewelry; and Emiliano Plaza in Sculpture for “Abstract Tree.” Middle School students who were also recognized with Silver Keys included Kirthi Chandra, James Donald, Isabella Ferber, Levi Gowen, Peyton Lien, Amber Navarra, Abby Prettyman and Patrick Wilkins. Recognized with Honorable Mentions were Xavier Robb, Rohan Vaidya, Amber Navarra, Amara Oguchi, Benjamin Marek, Julian Mathew, Saylor Hark, Isabella Kneen, Neel Kotecha, John Larsen, Mikaela Camarata (2), Kirthi Chandra (2), Marion Donald (2) and Isabella Ferber.
