Two Cooper Science Bowl Teams Advance to Semifinals

Two teams, totaling nine members of The John Cooper School Science Bowl, traveled with faculty sponsors Ms. Cathy Mock and Mr. Charles Lowery to compete in the CISD-SCI://TECH Senior High Science Bowl on Friday, where eight local public and private schools were represented. After 11 rounds of competition, both Cooper teams advanced to the semifinal round, and one team went on to earn first-place honors.
Participating students were Aaron Bates, Finn Dhamija, Ian Hou, Tim Lu, Hannah Nieuwveld, Aditya Pakal, Amy Tian, Gavin Winter, and Annabelle Wu.
“Mr. Lowery and I are incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and true sportsmanship displayed by both of our science bowl teams at the Conroe ISD Senior High Science Bowl,” Mock said. “Not only was this the first time The John Cooper School had two teams finish so strong and ultimately win the event, but both teams consistently scored more points in every match than any prior JCS teams in this competition.”
The local competition is organized annually according to the guidelines of the National Science Bowl, which is a math and science competition among teams of high school students. This program is designed to encourage students and teachers to achieve excellence in the sciences. The fast-paced question-and-answer quiz categories are Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Energy, Mathematics, and Physics. The John Cooper School team will travel to Texas A&M for the regional competition on February 3.
“The fast-paced nature of Science Bowl can sometimes be daunting, but we were able to overcome that obstacle by holding regular practices throughout the school year and fielding experienced team members who had developed enough background knowledge to be solid across multiple disciplines,” Mock said. “We feel better prepared in both knowledge and experience for the Regional Science Bowl at Texas A&M on February 3 than we have ever been in previous years.”
