11/15-16 at TISCA (Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association) Meet

Boys’ Team • 12th Place • 200 Free Relay School Record
Girls’ Team • Claggett Breaks School 100 Breaststroke Record

Coach Sara Bany: Dragon swimmers were back in the water this week for the annual TISCA meet, which showcases the fastest swimmers from around the Houston area and beyond.

Individual qualifiers swimming in the morning from the Cooper girls’ team included freshman Tillie Claggett (100 fly, 100 breast), junior Lauren Cordes (50 free, 500 free), freshman Caitlin Lanigan (50 free, 100 free) and junior Jane Ritch (200 free, 50 free). These four also swam the 200 free relay and 400 free relay, finishing 19th overall in both and just missing a qualifying spot in the finals to come back and swim at night. Claggett, however, swam to a season best 1:07.99 in the 100 breast, earning herself a spot in the B finals. She came back on a mission and dropped almost 2 more seconds Friday night to win the B finals, landing her 9th overall with a time of 1:06.09 which broke the Cooper school record by over a second. Be on the lookout for this record to fall several more times before this season is over!

On the boys’ side, our Dragon swimmers earned themselves 12th overall out of the 36 teams that scored points (64 total teams) and ahead of SPC rivals, St. John’s. Junior Chris Seymour lead the boys in scoring, placing in the top eight for both of his individual events (5th-100 fly, 7th-200 free). Senior Campbell Wolford, also earned himself a spot in the evening finishing 15th overall in the 100 freestyle. Other individual qualifiers for the boys were Vidyal Pradeepkumar (100 fly, 100 back), Henry Shea (200 IM, 100 fly), William Staebel (200 free, 100 breast) and Campbell Wolford (50 free).

The big story on the boys’ side came from their relays. The 200 free relay team of Pradeepkumar, Staebel, Seymour and Wolford swam to a new school record of 1:29.34 in the prelims and earned a spot in the finals at night. They came back for finals ready to go even faster and dropped another second off of their time. Their new school record in the 200 free relay is 1:28.31. The boys finished the meet, over twelve hours after we arrived for warm-ups, with the last event of the day – the 400 free relay. This team consisted of Wolford, Staebel, Shea, and Seymour. These four boys were able to drop three seconds from their time from prelims, win the B finals with a time of 3:14.76, and come within two seconds off the school record set at SPC last year!

All of the swimmers and Cooper fans made this such a fun meet to coach. Although we were small compared to the other teams, we had a presence in the meet and rallied around each of our swims. Congratulations to each of you for a great day of swimming!
