Coach Josh Childers: The Cooper Dragon’s bid for our first-ever SPC-3A Football Championship unfortunately came up a little short last night. Despite the outcome, I could not be any prouder of our boys after last night’s game. They never gave up in the game or on each other and fought all the way to the final snap. Though obviously not the outcome we wanted, this in no way diminishes the amazing season put together by these players. I would like to thank each one of them for all of their hard work and dedication in putting together an historic season. To the seniors, we will miss you and we thank you for all that you have done for this program. Also, thank you to the Cooper community for all of your support this season, you helped to make it truly special. Go Dragons!

Coach George Dohner: The Cooper Cross Country teams completed their seasons this weekend at the SPC Championship meet in Dallas. With ideal conditions and a fast course, the teams competed to the top of their abilities and surprised many with their gutsy performances. The boys’ team finished in third place and the girls finished in fourth.

The girls’ team started off the morning with race time temps in the 40s. Led by senior Ava Minarovic (15th) and freshman Rebecca Melin (18th), the team finished in an impressive fourth place, edging out powerhouse Hockaday by one point. Minarovic and Melin both achieved All-SPC honors, finishing in the top 20.

“This capped a wonderful cross country career for Ava. We are so proud of her and fine leader she has become! This was a perfect scenario for her final race,” Coach George Dohner said. “As for a Rebecca, this was a great beginning to what looks to be a bright future in our program. She works so hard in practice, but even more impressive is that she competes so well in meets. She runs with a determination, that can’t really be taught. What a great effort and we couldn’t be prouder of her.”

Also scoring points for Cooper were Uche Oguchi (24th), Katie Drake (26th), and Madison Breaux (42). “This group of young ladies has been a true joy to work with this season and for many, over the past four years,” Dohner said. “They have definitely left their mark on the program!”

The boys’ team competed ranked in the Top 4 amongst four really level teams. Cooper would finish in third place, just five points behind runner-up St. Marks. On this day, St. Stevens had all the right chips in place and dominated the day. Cooper placed all five of their scorers in the top 25, with four receiving All-SPC medals in the top 15. The team was led by Seniors Eli Araya (10th), Mitchell Shannon (11th), sophomore Will McDermott (13th) senior Eric Burns(15th) and junior Cadan Hanson (24th).

“This group of boys is one of the strongest teams we have ever had,” Dohner said. “We were five deep and had a real shot at getting a trophy We couldn’t have run any better today and are so proud of the boys’ strong performances. This was a special year and we want to thank each and every member of the team for a great season.”

The coaching staff would like to thank our seniors for their leadership this season. This has been a great group of kids and we wish them nothing but success in their future.

Coach Ray Hedden: It is hard to say goodbye to another year and specially to these seniors. I am so proud of this team’s fight and no-quit attitude. We were always the smallest team but put up the biggest fight. The best thing I can say is thank you. The SPC tournament had everybody contribute so we had total team involvement. The last point was scored with all the seniors on the court! It was a good trip finishing 2-1 on the tournament and 22-10 on the year.
