From Coach Brent Landrum: It was great to start conference off with a win. We hadn’t faced adversity in the first three games season but we had to last night. We handled it well. I was proud of the team for that. Last night was a total team win. The defense got stops when we needed them and the offense got hot at the right time. After only scoring seven points in the first quarter, the offense proceeded to put 50 more points on the board. The offensive line provided Evan with a lot of time. They played really well. This group of receivers is very special. They give Minarovic a lot of options. We now turn our attention to Irving Cistercian. We have to travel for the first time all year and that will require us to have a great week of practice. The crowd was electric last night as well.

From Coach Ray Hedden: Cooper played a very talented Concordia team and lost in three. We played good defense but didn’t have the offense to come out on top. We will play Awty Tuesday and try to get the ship turned around after two tough losses. Then we will start SPC play Friday and Saturday in Austin as we take on St Andrews and St Stephens.

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Boys’ Team Take First, Girls’ Team Wins Third

9/20 at the Willis Wildcat Invitational, Misty Meadows Girl Scout Camp

Boys’ Team: 1st Place
The John Cooper boys took first place in the Willis Wildkat Invitational on Sept. 20. The John Cooper School boys’ cross country team put five runners in the top 20. Senior Eli Araya led Cooper with an impressive sixth place finish in 16:51. He was followed by junior Cadan Hanson and sophomore Will McDermott who finished in tenth and eleventh place. Senior Erik Burns finished 13th and freshman Drew Wilkerson finished 19th in his first 5k race.

“This was a great night for us” said Coach George Dohner. “We ran great in very tough conditions on a pretty challenging course. We had a solid showing, all without our top runner, Mitchell Shannon. This shows how much depth we have on the boys’ side.”

The Cooper Girls finished in third place, despite a lightning delay and short warmup. Sophomore Katie Drake continues to lead the team with a seventh place finish. Drake ran a 20:29, nearly two minutes faster than her time a year ago on this same course. Senior Ava Minarovic ran well, medaling in 20th place. Junior Madison Breaux and freshmen Amber Navarra and Rebecca Melin all packed up and ran well finish 25th, 26th, and 27th.

“The girls are making good progress,” said Dohner. “This was our first meet in two and a half weeks. The teams have trained hard and were ready to compete.”
Next up for Cooper Cross Country is the Nike South Meet, Saturday morning in The Woodlands.
