Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team 2018 PREVIEW

Comments from Coach Ray Hedden, who begins his third season coaching at Cooper.

The Season
This year the team has come in with a new identity. We are going to have to win games differently than in the previous years. We graduated three starters and another starter moved back overseas. That means we had to come in, find the chemistry early and learn how to win with a different approach. We are a better defensive team than last year and have improved our serving and passing. Most teams will be bigger than us, but we will be smarter and out hustle most teams, which makes us a difficult team to play as we will frustrate a lot of opponents.

Goals
I am really excited for this season! I want to refocus our efforts around defense and ball control while not losing our touch with effort, teamwork and fundamentals. The girls have done a good job so far concentrating on those areas. After our first two tournaments and two home games, I am very happy with both the varsity and JV teams executing on those directions. We see the effort, teamwork and fundamentals starting to take off. The varsity team is gaining ground on their chemistry, which makes coaching them a ton of fun. They have always been a fun group. I think we will make a run at the title again this year as long as we keep building and improving in our efforts.
