Hear From 7th/8th Grade Science Teacher Uma Desabhotla

The John Cooper School stands by its mission statement of providing a challenging and diverse student environment in so many ways. As a parent, I could not have asked for a better school as the quality of every aspect of the school, from the education to the facilities, makes Cooper a unique place.

The classrooms and the laboratories are state-of-the-art, allowing students to do projects and experiments that wouldn’t be possible in any other environment. The school values professional development for its faculty. This summer, I attended a Project Based Learning (PBL) conference, which focused on integrating projects and other interactive activities into the classroom. These experiences help make classes more engaging for students.

During the first 10 weeks in 7th grade, the students would re-learn lab safety and the skills to become a successful scientist, all through carefully planned lab activities and projects. Our aim is to teach them to ask the right questions and learn to research efficiently. All the required materials have been ordered and planning is in progress to make this year an effective one. My 8th grade students will focus on Scientific Literacy and Physics. There would be projects that help them understand what true scientific research is about. They should be able to identify true science from whatever they are fed on internet. I am looking forward to implementing my knowledge that I received in my PBL training I went to last spring and over the summer.

From the perspective of a parent, I couldn’t imagine my kids in any other school but Cooper. The quality of education is phenomenal, and I know that my kids are well prepared for college life. Cooper lives up to its name as a college prep school not only with its rigorous academics, but also with the inclusive and open environment that the faculty and staff here create. From the perspective of a teacher, I couldn’t imagine myself in any other environment. Cooper supports use of Project Based Learning and provides engaging learning environments.

It is an honor to teach at JCS where no expense is spared to create a better environment for the students.
