Seniors Give Presentations on Pilot Independent Study Program

The John Cooper Upper School initiated an Independent Study Program (ISP) that was implemented during the 2016-17 school year that offered seniors the opportunity to design a substantive learning experience in place of traditional coursework offered by the school.

An intensive application process developed by Head of Upper School Stephen Popp and English faculty member Adam Valenstein, required interested students to design and submit their own course of study with a schedule of deadlines and a description of the proposed finished products. Once approved by Popp, four students worked steadily throughout the year with a faculty sponsor and gave year-end presentations during the lunch hour on May 16 and 17 in the Ramirez Lecture Hall to showcase their learning experiences.

On May 16, Will Ducharme presented “Getting an A++ in C++” and Gina Valderamma presented “Building Your First App in Android.” On May 17, Cassidy Sellers spoke about “The Impact of Land Management Practices on Biodiversity” and Ian Steneker discussed "An Independent Study of the Basics of C++." “ISPs are student-generated and student-driven with faculty and administrative support and oversight,” Popp said. “We are very pleased with the success of the pilot program and are opening the application process to juniors for next year.”
