Seventh Grade Girls Team Wins HJPC Track & Field Championships

Team Takes Top Trophy At Meet Held At Home on Pate Track

For the first time in the school’s history, The John Cooper School won the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference Championship in the 7th grade girls’ division held at Cooper’s Pate Track on April 19 and 21. The Cooper 7th grade girls’ team won their 12-school conference championship by a small margin of just four points, scoring 115 to beat out St. John’s with 111. Placing third was The Village School. Cooper’s other Middle School track & field teams (6th grade boys and girls, 7th grade boys, and 8th grade boys and girls) also placed in the top seven in their respective divisions.

“After the first day of running events, our 7th grade girls were sitting behind St. John by about 10 points, and they had finished behind St. John’s in two large meets earlier this season,” said Coach Walt Steadman. “On the second day, Sarah McWilliams won the individual high jump, but we were still behind because St. John’s was racking up points in other field events. I looked at the other coaches and said this is going to come down to the throwing events, and it certainly did. The last event to finish was the discus. Isabelle Stanosheck and Karson Smith placing second and third respectively in the discus gave the team the needed points to overtake St. John’s and win the team championship, 115 to 110.”

“This was truly a team championship,” Steadman continued. “Twelve of the girls scored at least one point in the championship meet, and we certainly needed every one of those points to win overall. This was the first time that we’ve had a 7th grade girls’ team at Cooper bring home the HJPC championship.” The team is also coached by Carrie Aman, George Dohner, Kathie Parker, Bryan Sherman and Kevin Stanosheck.
