Cooper Biotech Team Places Third In Regional Competition

Ran a DNA Electophoresis Gel to Solve Problem

Out of 70 teams that competed in the Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) Regional Biotechnology Competition, The John Cooper School team of Kyle Dunn and Lyla Dong placed third overall. Fellow students Aiman Abdul Razak and Lyssa Lai won second place for Excellence in Data Analysis and Nathaniel Wu and Hannah Collins were awarded third place for Excellence in Data Analysis.

The competition was held at Lone Star College's Biotechnology Lab on February 11. Cooper faculty member and science department chair, Dr. Tina Davies, explained the process. “Students made and ran a DNA electrophoresis gel to solve a forensics problem, then answered questions about technique, biotechnology and the solution to the scenario,” Davies explained.

“The scenario they were given involved trying to find which dog owner had violated the requirement of tidying up after their dog in a Woodlands dog park connected to one of the villages by comparing the dog's DNA to others that might have been involved.”
