Science Students Qualify for Regionals At District Level of Jr. High Science Fair

District Competition to be Held in Houston, February 24-25

Middle School science students who represented The John Cooper School at the district level CB&I Jr. High Science Fair, held at the Lone Star Convention Center on February 3, all qualified to move on in competition.

Ally Flinn took first place in Engineering: Chemical, as did Rohan Vaidya in Chemistry. Vishnu Swaminathan placed second in Materials and Bioengineering, as did Vishal Subramanian in Aerospace. All four students qualified to compete at the regional level at the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston to be held on February 24 and 25. Flinn and Vaidya both found inspiration for their experiments at school.

Vaidya became interested in problems with plastics after participating in an assignment on marine debris and developed a project that investigated the strength of different biodegradable plastics. Flinn wanted to test her theory that she can concentrate better when chewing gum, but due to a school rule against gum chewing because of carpeted hallways, she instead tested methods to remove gum from carpet and developed interesting results.

Swaminathan noticed mats of plant material hanging in windows while traveling in India and decided to explore the cool properties of the vetiver root for his project. Subramanian’s project focused on the aerodynamics of wing designs, testing to see if shape really is “a drag.”

“Science fair was an optional activity this school year and these four students completed their projects while keeping up with all their other academics and extracurricular activities,” said science teacher Stef Groves. “We are very proud of the extra effort and perseverance demonstrated by these four students.”
