Cooper Girls Swim Into First, Boys’ Second, For First Place Team Victory At Invitational

HAPP Invitational Results

The John Cooper School girls’ and boys’ varsity swim teams combined to capture first place honors out of a pool of 14 area teams at the HAPP (Houston Association of Private and Parochial Schools) Invitational on January 28. Separately, the girls brought home first place with an eight-point lead over Concordia, while the boys gathered a second-place finish, behind Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA).

“The teams did an excellent job. Both teams swam good races, without swimming their best times,” said Steve Breeding, head swim coach for The John Cooper School. “Had the boys’ team swam their best times, we could have won the boys as well.”

The girls swam strong in both relays. The team of Maddy Sinkovic, Grace Ritch, Jane Ritch and Lauren Cordes finished first in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:59.18. The Dragon team finished first again in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:44.97.

The boys’ team took second place in both relays. In the 200 Medley Relay, Campbell Wolford, William Staebel, Christopher Seymour and Ignacio Ranieri teamed up for a time of 1:45.94. The team returned for the 200 Free Relay to finish the race in 1:33.35.

Individual highlights for the girls’ team include senior Grace Ritch’s first place finishes in both the 200 Free (2:00.38) and the 100 Butterfly (1:01.03). Ritch was supported by the freshmen members of the team. Lauren Cordes brought home a first place in the 500 Free (5:33.50) and a second in the 200 Free (2:06.27). Maddy Sinkovic earned second place honors for the 200 IM (2:25.06) and third place in the 100 Free (57.92). Jane Ritch swam 2:26.74 in the 200 IM for a third-place finish and also earned points for her sixth place finish in the 100 Free (59.23).

Highlights for the boys’ team included freshman Christopher Seymour’s first place finish in the 100 Butterfly (54.41) and a second-place finish in the 500 Free (4:51.18). Sophomore William Staebel brought home second place in both the 200 Free (1:52.01) and the 100 Free (50.37). Sophomore Campbell Wolford’s time of 1:55.47 in the 200 Free earned him 3rd place honors and he also came in fourth in the 100 Free (52.77). Sophomore Vidyal Pradeepkumar added points with a third-place finish in the 100 Butterfly (55.83) and fifth place in the 100 Back (59.23). Also scoring points for the boys’ team was senior Ignacio Ranieri who came in third in the 50 Free (23.97) and sophomore Mitchell Shannon’s 8th place finish in the 500 Free (5:49.07).

The Cooper Dragons will compete against many of the same teams on February 11 at the Conroe ISD Natatorium for the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships.
“They are tired from training but should be rested in time for the SPC Championships,” said Breeding. “We are looking forward to a great championship meet in two weeks.”
