Dragon Football Finishes Regular Season Undefeated In Conference, Cross Country Teams Compete At SPC South Zone

"Strength and growth come only from continuous effort and struggle". Having struggled the past two weeks there was an unknown for the Dragons as moved on to play their toughest opponent of the year on Friday. In their normal fashion, the Dragons elevated their play to their opponent coming away with a 50-34 win over the Trojans of Trinity Valley. In preview of what will be the SPC championship game in a couple of weeks, spectators saw two tough teams trying to figure each other out. The game was at a deadlock, tied at 21 at halftime, and even the seemingly lopsided final score does not tell the true story of how tough a battle it was. Cooper football stars that have shined all year shined again under the Friday night lights. Kielar Sullivan had multiple touchdowns, one on a kick return and quarterback Vaughn McKeever may have played his best game of the year Leading the Dragon offense to a 50-point game, Dean Calhoun ran the ball well and is showing that he is part of the foundation of Dragon scoring success. What's left to say about the Dragon defense that hasn't been said all year? Dragon defensive stars like Carson Berger, Owen Baadsgaard and Jackson Todd who have done so much all year, did more Friday to help hold down the high-scoring fast-paced Trojan offense. The Dragons adjusted at the half to really stamp out the Trojans offensive threats, giving up only one first-team touchdown in the second half as the last was in garbage time. The Dragons are still missing key pieces due to injury and hope they can see those players back for the championship game. Cooper has a week off before seeing the Trojans again for the title. The championship game comes to Houston this year at Panther Stadium, home to CE King High School of Sheldon ISD. The Dragons will play the early game with a kickoff time of 2 p.m. –Coach Daniel Lewis

10/22 at SPC South Zone Championship*, St Andrew’s Episcopal
Girls 3rd place • Boys 2nd place
The Cooper Cross Country teams competed in Austin on Oct. 22, showing well in the SPC South Zone Championship meet. The girls finished in third place while the boys finished in second place, only five points behind St John’s.
“We had an amazing effort from our boys’ and girls’ teams today,” Coach George Dohner said. “On the girl’s side, Megan Day finished eighth place and had a great day leading the team. Milla Signorelli had a gutsy performance, catching a cramp at a mile-and-a-quarter in the race, but battled through to finish in 18th place. Also, senior Chloe Smith had an incredible effort leaving everything out on the course today.” Tahira King and Elisa Ferber would finish out the team scoring to help Cooper finish in third place.
“On the boys’ side, this was our best team performance by far,” Dohner said. “Grey Mendenhall led our boys in fifth place, followed by Aditya Pakal in seventh. Ryan Taylor finished in 11th place, passing people the entire race.” Nathan Seamans and Walter Day would finish in 18th and 20th place. “Two weeks ago, the boys finished 50 points behind St Johns. This week we closed that gap to only 5 points,” Dohner said.
“We put five in the Top 20 with all five runners receiving All-South Zone honors. We couldn’t be prouder of our boys’ and girls’ teams!”
Cooper will be back at it in two weeks, at the SPC Championship meet on Nov. 5 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.
