VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY
10/1 at Chili Pepper Festival, University of Arkansas
Girls 26th place  • Boys 43rd place

The Cooper XC teams traveled to Fayetteville Arkansas to run in the prestigious 34th Annual Chili Pepper XC Festival amongst over 100 high schools from around the nation. Cooper runners recorded numerous Personal Records (PRs) on the speedy collegiate course run by the University of Arkansas.

Cooper competed in four events with their top runners entered in the "El Caliente" elite races.

The girls started the day finishing in 26th place in a field of 400 runners from 50 schools.  The girls were led by sophomore Milla Signorelli (19:22) who beat her personal best by nearly 36 seconds. Senior Megan Day improved her personal best by 29 seconds with a time of 19:24. Also running well, were sophomore Tahira King (21:06), Ava Perugini (21:20) and Chloe Smith (21:27) in the fast 5000m run.

The boys were led by junior Ryan Taylor, who managed to break the 17-minute mark for the first time with a time of 16:58. “Sophomores Walter Day and Nathan Montes really stepped up today as well,” Coach George Dohner said. “Two of our top five runners went down with injuries and it was great to have some kids really step up and perform well.”  Christopher Trenholme and Aditya Pakal rounded out the team scorers. “The goal was to run fast and run fast they did!” Dohner said. “I am so happy that we finally got to run this meet in Arkansas.  The weather was ideal, and the kids really performed well amongst some of the best runners in the nation.”

Next for Cooper is the St. John’s Meet next Saturday, October 8 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.  First races begin at 8:00 am.

VARSITY FOOTBALL
9/30 at Cistercian Prep* • 48-13 W

“I don’t care who the biggest fish in the pond is. I’m a whole different animal.”

The Dragons reminded the SPC on Friday night that they are indeed a whole different animal as they dismantled the Cistercian Hawks winning by a score of 48-13. The Dragons came out fast and stayed hot scoring on seven of eight total offensive possessions on the evening. Cooper went into halftime up 28-0 to a silenced Hawk crowd and continued the assault in the second half, forcing a running clock for most of the second half. WR Kielar Sullivan reminded us all why he will go down as one of the best to do it at Cooper, hauling in 11 receptions for 144 yards and three touchdowns. QB Vaughn McKeever kept his cool in the pocket throwing for 330 yards and five touchdowns. His backfield mate RB Dean Calhoun found space to find 65 yards rushing and another two touchdowns for the Dragons on the ground. The Dragon defense is unheralded, but not unknown, as once again they stood on their head. LB Owen Baadsgaard was everywhere on defense and even lent his talents to special teams making tackles deep in Hawk territory. The Cooper defense kept yet another opponent under 300 total yards, with players like Alex Rovirosa and Alan Kuvshinikov racking up close to double-digit tackles causing displeasure for the Hawk offensive attempt.  The Dragons come home this Friday as they welcome the Falcons of Fort Worth Country Day School.  Kickoff at 7 p.m. on Pugh Field on The John Cooper School campus.  –Coach Daniel Lewis
