Dragons are 2022 TTCA State Champions for Private Schools

Coach Jill DelRio: The Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) hosted an inaugural Private School Tennis Team Championship this weekend. Nine teams participated in the event. Our boys and girls tennis team came away victorious after two days of exhausting play. The team beat Abilene Christian School and Nolan Catholic School on Friday with only one loss out of 26 matches. On Saturday the team beat out a very talented Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes team to make it to the championships.

The competition on Saturday was so great that we had to wait three hours after our scheduled time to play because the match before to determine our opponent was not determined until the last match.

Three hours is a long time to wait but John Cooper players were motivated to win and stayed focused on the goal the entire time.
All of the players played well, some players playing both singles and doubles, giving them eight matches this weekend. Mahi Khurana and Erika Olson were never really challenged, only giving a few games to their opponents out of their eight matches. Marielle Sauber and Olivia Sauber played both doubles and singles as well and did not lose any of their matches winning all but one in straight sets.

Parker Gregory and Theo Nemeth also played both lines, winning all on Friday and only having a couple of challenges on Saturday.
Brie Leavitt stepped up for the team as well playing both lines in two of our matches winning four out of her six matches. Presley Sansbury normally playing only doubles played one singles match adding a win for the team. On the reverse, Luke Smith normally only plays singles but was able to help the boys team in doubles as well.

Our doubles specialists Joey Barron, Danny Capsimalis, Tristan Dakai, and Nora Alizadeh played solid matches against some very strong doubles teams.

Laurent Moran and Payton Lindsay were ready to step in for the teams as our tournament alternates. Ibrahim AliKhan our team manager was at the ready with water, Gatorade, and making sure we had pictures to document our team's outstanding wins.

This tournament was a great test for the team with our conference matches just around the corner. On Tuesday we play Kinkaid School at home and on Thursday we play Awty on their home courts.
