Senior Takes Experience from Eco-Club To Learn More Through Internship
Working with CCE/CCL Congressional District 8
Senior Maya Kolluri, a founding member and the 2019-20 President of The John Cooper School’s Eco-Club, was scheduled to give a presentation to Congressman Kevin Brady about the work the club has done to make the Cooper campus more sustainable.
Although the presentation had to be canceled due to COVID-19, the experience she gained as a club member led Kolluri to apply and get accepted for a summer internship with Citizens’ Climate Education and Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCE/CCL), non-profit, nonpartisan, grassroots environmental organizations that are focused on local and national policies to address climate change.
This summer, Kolluri will be working with CCE/CCL to cover congressman Brady’s Congressional District Texas-08 that includes The Woodlands, Conroe and Huntsville.
Kolluri will study environmental engineering at The University of Texas at Austin this fall, and says she is proud of the accomplishments of Cooper’s Eco-Club and grateful for all she has learned.
“Our more most recent effort was the Crayola ColorCycle program that enables schools to recycle used markers of any brand,” she said. “We set up collection stations for used markers throughout the school, and when we had enough, shipped them to be recycled.”
The Eco-club also had educational events on campus and partnered with the Technology Department to implement a very successful E-Waste Recycling Program to organize the recycling of electronic items such as computers, laptops, phones, cables, catteries, audio-video equipment and printers.
Kolluri says she is very much looking forward to the summer internship. “Current circumstances require us to meet online, but I really look forward to this opportunity to gain more experience,” she said.
“Climate change is something that I am really passionate about, so I am excited to be in a setting that allows me to learn more about this topic from a real-life lens. I also look forward to learning more about energy policy and health effects on climate change.”
