VARSITY FOOTBALL returns to 3-A championship

11/1 at Austin Saints* • 41-7 WIN

The Dragons won 41-7 to go 7-2 on the season and the right to compete for a SPC championship next weekend. The Dragon offense had 450 yards on 64 plays, 323 rushing and 127 passing. The Dragon defense held Austin Saints to 27 rushing yards and 123 passing yards.

Coach Erik DeHaven: This was a great program win for us. Our players did not get distracted with the potential outcome of this game. We played one play at a time and our senior leadership kept us grounded. I expect the same focus and determination going into the championship game. This is the biggest game of the year because it’s the next one.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
heads to SPC championships as #2 seed

10/29 at St. John’s* • 3-1 WIN

Coach Ray Hedden: Tuesday we squared up against defending SPC champs, St John’s.

We started off with a very competitive first set losing in close fashion. The second set was much of the same but with Cooper prevailing, winning in a tight finish to Set 2. Going into the third set tied up, we were down 19-7 when we went on a run through some clutch serving and defense. The team pushed through what is one of the biggest comebacks I have ever been a part of to win by 2 (25-23) to take a 2-1 lead. I believe that win took all momentum away from the home team and into our hands as we went on to win the fourth set and match 25-19. I was very proud of how the team played and rallied when down. The win secured the #2 Seed and a first-round bye for SPC championships.

Going into SPC we are positioned well to make a run. We will have to go through the North’s best if we plan to be there in the end. I think we have the plan, players and mentality to do it!

St John’s game stand outs: Lauren Wolford and Laura Weatherford led in serving, while AC Adams led in passing. Hailey Huettel, AJ Harrell, AC Adam, Yasmin Sebastiany and Tatum Threadgill all played key roles in the hitting category to take us to a victory!
5-2 in conference play

VARSITY SWIMMING & DIVING

11/1-2 at The Woodlands Invitational
Boys 6th • Girls 8th

Coach Sara Bany: Cooper swimming and diving kicked off the season this week with practices and an early season meet at The Woodlands Invitational.
On the girls’ side, last season’s SPC Champion, Adelaide Herman, dove to an 8th place finish in the 1-meter diving event on Friday.

In swimming, the girls were led by sophomore, Caitlin Lanigan, finishing 4th in both the 50 free and the 100 fly. Also contributing points both individually and in relays were returning swimmers, junior, Katia Guerrero (200 free, 100 fly), sophomores Tillie Claggett (50 free), Victoria Davila (50 free, 100 back), Noelle Harris (50 free, 100 breast) and Ellie Wang (50 free, 100 free), and our new freshmen Peyton Boone (100 free) and Katie Kovin (50 free, 100 back). The 200 medley relay of Lanigan, Claggett, Guerrero and Davila came in 9th, the 200 free relay team of Wang, Harris, Claggett and Davila finished 19th, and the 400 free relay team of Lanigan, Guerrero, Claggett and Kovin ended up 13th. The girls finished 8th out of the 14 teams this weekend.

Senior, Chris Seymour led the boys team to a 6th place finish out of 15 teams. Seymour finished 1st in the 100 fly and 2nd in the 200 free. Also swimming and scoring points were sophomore Henry Shea, 8th in the 100 fly, 6th in the 100 back, and freshmen Victor Guerrero, 5th in the 50 free, 3rd in the 100 fly along. Guerrero, Shea, and Seymour along freshman, Alexander Dharbal swam the 200 and 400 free relays finishing 6th place in both.

Everyone who swam in this meet the first week of the season has met the qualifying time standards for the SPC Championship meet in February. What an accomplishment for these Cooper swimmers!
