Results from the week of October 21

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY

10/26 at SPC South Zone Championships*

Boys’ team third place • Girls’ team third place

Cooper cross country teams competed in the SPC South Zone meet in Austin, TX this past weekend. Cooper placed four boys and four girls in the Top 20 finishers at the championship precursor. Receiving All-South Zone honors for the boys were, Will McDermott (4th), Cadan Hanson, (5th), Zac Winton (19th) and Vishnu Swaminathan (20th). All-South Zone honorees for the girls were, Katie Drake (11th), Madison Breaux (12th), Chloe Smith (14th) and Megan Day (18th).

The boys’ team was led by Will McDermott and Cadan Hanson, who finished in fourth and fifth place. The Dragons were six points shy of the second-place team, St. Steven’s, to finish in third place. The meet was won by one of the SPC favorites, St. John’s School.

“The boys ran very well, and we are so proud of the effort of all of our runners,” Coach George Dohner said. “We competed well against some of the best runners in SPC and look forward to the Championship race.”

The girls’ team gained third place honors, led by Katie Drake, who finished in 11th place. The team beat SPC-rival St. Johns, for the first time this season.
“Katie has been a great leader this year and pulled our top pack of five girls through the race,” Dohner said. “She did a good job of pushing the pace and keeping the girls under control. We are happy with the team’s preparation for the final meet in November. Every workout is starting to show in every competition and we are finally racing at our fitness level.”

The teams also completed inter-squad races and this meet helped complete Cooper’s 10-member Championship team, who will compete in November. “This always helps raise our level of competition,” Dohner said. “Of the 20 boys’ team runners, there were six personal bests and 10 of our 17 girls also set personal bests, which is exactly what we hope to have happen at the end of a season–everyone is dialed in and with a couple of weeks left, we will continue to prepare.”

Cooper will co-host the SPC Championship meet on November 9th at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

10/22 at Awty International* • 3-0 WIN
25-19, 25-23, 25-21

10/24 at Houston Christian* • 3-1 LOSS
22-25, 20-25, 25-11, 18-25

AJ Harrell had 26 kills this week to lead the team.
Laura Weatherford logged 42 digs this week.

Coach Ray Hedden: Every year has a tough loss and Houston Christian was ours. I know this team will rebound and play well against St. John’s where I know we will have our hands full with their offense. If we can get back to Cooper Volleyball, then we will be very competitive. I don’t want to minimize the win vs. Awty, as we played very well but I think it is very important to refocus so that we can head into the SPC Championships with great momentum.
