Football Opens Season With Win, Volleyball Wins First Home Match, Cross Country Teams Win Invitational

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY
8/31 hosting Cooper Dragon Invitational, Burroughs Park
Boys 1st place • Girls 1st place
It was a great day for the Cooper Cross Country teams as they hosted their annual Dragon Invitational. The meet hosted 43 private and public high school teams from the Houston area, along with 42 middle school teams. Both girls’ and boys’ varsity teams finished in first place in the 3200 meter race.
The boys’ team started off the morning edging out a talented 6A public school Clear Springs with five scorers in the top 21 spots. Junior Will McDermott ran 10:00 flat to take first place, recording the 3rd fastest Cooper time on this course. He was followed by Cadan Hanson in second place with an impressive 10:08. Vishnu Swaminathan finished in 11th place, Zac Winton and Andrew Mahler rounded out the team scoring in 19th and 21st place. We ran really well today with all eight varsity runners setting personal bests 3200 m race.
The girls’ team won the meet over two competitive SPC teams of their SPC rivals. Cooper tied Episcopal and took 1st place on a tie-breaker. Cooper also finished ahead of Kinkaid, who won the Cooper meet a year ago. Katie Drake finished in 12th place to lead the Cooper runners. Freshman Chloe Smith finished in 14th place. Rebecca Melin (17th), Madison Breaux (19) and Megan Day (22nd) rounded out the championship scoring. Sophomore Abby Mendenhall ended up being the difference as her 24th place finished broke the tie with Episcopal. Coach George Dohner was impressed with the team’s performance. “When our Top 5 girls finish a race within 25 seconds of each other, it shows that we have a strong team. In fact, all nine of our varsity runners were within 55 seconds of each other. We had a really good summer of training is showing with each performance,” Dohner said. “Uur JV teams also ran well. The JV girls were 1st place and the JV boys were 2nd.”
The coaches would like to publicly thank the parent volunteers, Dragon Booster Club, The Interact Club, and the XC Coaching staff, for helping run another successful Dragon invitational. This was our biggest and best event to date, and we couldn’t have done it without their support.

The Varsity Football team starts the 2019 season strong with a 42-0 victory over Frassati Catholic School.
The Dragons’ offense had close to 400 yards on the night and the defense held Frassati to -7 rushing yards and 33 total yards.
Coach Erik DeHaven: “I am proud of our team’s effort and determination. We must be more disciplined in the penalty department. But overall it was a step in the right direction.”
