Cooper Cheer Is Ready To SHOUT!
Dragons gather individual and team accolades at camp.
Twenty-two members of The John Cooper School cheer squad traveled to Dallas in June to participate in a summer cheer camp presented by the National Cheerleading Association (NCA).
The rigorous four-day cheer camp was designed to hone their skills with jump, stunt, pyramid, dance, cheer, chant, sideline and crowd participation classes. The team also bonded with team workouts, cheer games and leadership sessions.
“As a group, the camp staff recognized and awarded us with many team accolades and the top varsity cheer team trophy,” said Marilu Harman, head cheer coach for The John Cooper School. “The squad was also presented with the prestigious Herkie Award, for the team that demonstrates true spirit, unity and team leadership throughout the week. What a great accomplishment for the squad!”
The team also earned superior rankings for their dance and sideline chant, along with multiple technical excellence awards, safety and credentialing awards, and team spirit awards.
Senior Alexis Eckerson earned the Individual Leadership Award at the end of camp and the Pin It Forward Honor on the first day of camp for “leadership, spirit, commitment, kindness and motivation. The pin is then forwarded by the recipient to a cheerleader on the last day of camp. Senior Caitie Blank then earned this pin recognition on the final day.
Six Dragons were selected as All American nominees–seniors Haley Edone and Alexis Eckerson, junior Jenna Braun, sophomore Brooke Taylor and freshmen Addy Tague and Sarah Sebesta.
Braun and Tague were selected for NCA’s final All-American Cheer Team qualifying them to compete in national events.
“It takes everyone to win, and everyone on the team plays an important role,” said Harman. “What a joy to see this team ‘all in’ for one goal.”
