Social Media Expert, Motivational Speaker Round Out Series

Getz Addresses Technologies; Law the Importance of Being One's Best

EDITOR’S NOTE:
Lori Getz and Alvin Law rounded out the 2018-19 speaker series on campus in April. Law (www.alvinlaw.com), a motivational speaker, broadcaster, author and musician, spoke about the importance of striving to be one's best, no matter what the circumstances. Law was born without arms and spoke about "breaking free of the labels that bind you and the life you deserve." Senior Maya Robles wrote the following about the impact of a presentation given by Lori Getz (www.lorigetz.com), a social media and technology education expert with Cyber Education Consultants. Getz spoke to students in all three divisions and gave an evening talk with parents about internet safety, cyber security, ethics and technology.

Lori Getz, founder of Cyber Education Consultants and public awareness speaker, returned to the Cooper campus on April 9 and gave a personal and informative talk to the ninth grade class in the Ramirez Lecture Hall. She spoke largely about her what she specializes in—technology—starting with a comical anecdote about her daughter ordering items from their family’s Amazon account thanks to the help of her “friend” Alexa, and later transitioning into the real effects that using technologies has on our lives.

Getz reminds us that like anything else, technology has its pros and its cons, and the subsequent responsibilities that follow. She posed several questions to the freshmen: How can we be safe with technology? How is technology affecting privacy? and How is technology affecting our relationships?

As the audience had this to mull over and reflected on their relationships with social media and digital age technology, Getz shared some advice. She suggested using distraction-eliminating apps during times of anticipated productivity (i.e. doing homework, studying), sleeping in a separate room from your technological devices, and never sharing anything online—privately or publicly—that you wouldn’t mind everyone seeing.

Members of the audience had gaping mouths, surprised at the facts that companies like Instagram and Snapchat frequently sell your data to third party advertising websites for profit.

Ultimately, Getz encouraged the audience to find a balance for technology through always questioning your own habits by using the following questions, assessing your situation, and taking preventative measures to better your quality of life.

            1) Do I have time for this right now?
            2) How is my physical/mental health doing?
