VARSITY SWIMMING & DIVING

1/18 at HAPPI • 4th place

Coach Sara Bany: On Saturday, Cooper swimmers traveled to the University of Houston, where we hosted nearly 400 swimmers from 22 teams in the Houston Area Private and Parochial Swimming Invitational (HAPPI). First off, I want to send a HUGE thank you to the parents and Interact volunteers who helped at this meet. We could not have run it without you! The meet was scored with the boys’ and girls’ teams together and Cooper finished 4th overall!

Leading our team with points was senior, Chris Seymour who won both the 200 IM with a new school record time of 1:57.61 and the 100 Butterfly. Following Seymour in points was freshman Victor Guerrero who placed 2nd in the 100 Freestyle and 4th in the 500 Freestyle. Henry Shea had a great meet as well, swimming season-best times and placed 5th in both the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke. The boys’ 200 Medley Relay team of Alex Dharbal, Nicholas Harris, Victor Guerrero and Andrew Mahler finished in 9th place overall. The 200 Free Relay team of Seymour, Dharbal, Mahler and Harris finished 7th overall, while the 400 Free Relay team of Shea, Guerrero, Dharbal and Seymour finished 2nd overall with a season-best time of 3:20.62.

Senior, Lauren Cordes led the girls’ team in scoring placing 3rd in the 500 Freestyle and 7th in the 200 IM. Cordes was followed by fellow senior Jane Ritch, who placed 5th in the 100 Butterfly and 9th in the 50 Freestyle. Tillie Claggett also scored points for the girls’ team with a 4th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke. The girls’ 400 Free Relay team of Claggett, Katia Guerrero, Ritch and Cordes finished in 5th place.

This was a great meet where we got to honor all of the seniors from private schools all around Houston as they swam in one of their last high school meets of the season. This weekend we got a glimpse of how the team is doing as a whole and how individual swimmers are responding to our season of training. We have just a couple more weeks to prepare and fine-tune before SPC Championships in February and I like where we are physically and mentally!
