Founded in 1974, The Woodlands is a 27,000 acre forested community located 40 miles north of downtown Houston. The Woodlands encompasses seven residential villages, (with an eighth currently being developed); three distinct corporate/commercial centers; a resort and conference center; a luxury hotel and convention center; hospitals and health care facilities; and shopping, dining, entertainment and recreational amenities.

Throughout its history, The Woodlands has been a leader among master-planned communities, especially in the area of environmental preservation. Of the 27,000 total acres, 5,000 acres are currently developed to green space, in parks, golf courses and greenbelts. Nearly 8,000 acres will remain as undeveloped green space when the build out of the community is complete.

The Woodlands currently has more than 78,000 residents. It has led the Houston area in new home sales every year since 1990 and ranks first in Texas and seventh in the nation in new home sales. There are now over 24,000 single-family homes and over 6,900 apartments and townhomes in The Woodlands.

More than 1,200 businesses and corporations reside in The Woodlands. There is nearly 22 million square feet of commercial, industrial, and institutional development, providing jobs for more than 37,000 people.

Originally a project of Houston-based Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., The Woodlands is now a project of The Woodlands Development Company, a limited partnership of Morgan Stanley and General Growth Properties, Inc.
